Interval Training

How many of you do it? Why do you do it? What is interval training?

It has been a long time since I have personally done interval training. Over the years when I used to run marathons I did a lot of this type of training. But, it has been almost 2 years since I trained for a marathon so I haven’t done much IT (interval training)!

I recently started adding this type of training back into my workout. My reasoning is to boost my workout and to shock my body. I have reached a sort of plateau in my weight loss/toning venture and need to get past that! IT is the best way to get over that hump, if you will. Doing this type of training makes you burn more calories in a short period of time. Who doesn’t want to burn calories quickly!? Another reason I made the decision to add this type of training to my workout is because honestly, I was getting bored with my regular cardio routine. I don’t know about you but when I get bored with working out, I usually “take a break.” However, I have vowed to “never start over” in my fitness journey again (been there, done that too many times!) so I need to keep it fun and exciting!

Now that you know I have started IT in my workouts again, do you know WHAT it is? It is really simple (another reason I love it!) and no special equipment is needed! You can use what you have (or what the gym has), you can actually do it without any equipment at all! It’s not as complicated as you might think. Interval training is simply alternating bursts of intense activity with intervals of lighter activity.
Take walking. If you’re in good shape, you might incorporate short bursts of jogging into your regular brisk walks. If you’re less fit, you might alternate leisurely walking with periods of faster walking. For example, if you’re walking outdoors, you could walk faster between certain mailboxes, trees or other landmarks.
Now that you know what IT is and how it is beneficial to you……when is your first (or next) IT workout! Make it a great weekend friends! Remember, just because it is the weekend doesn’t mean we don’t keep up on our fitness!
